The dilemma seems to be this: either Jonson was writing at random, or he knew of unacknowledged Baconian work which he was not free to disclose. Everyone has the right to form his own opinion upon that, as upon other matters of historical controversy. Here and there, too, a stile has been removed or a gate has become a gap. More than thirty years ago the writer came to the double conclusion, (a) that whoever _Shakespeare_ might have been, Shakspere was not the man; (b) that of all the known poets of that day, it was Bacon and Bacon alone who seemed to possess the necessary qualifications. We do not, as in Induction, feel ourselves on the brink of some experimental or other proof which at any moment may raise it into certainty.
